Grocery errand leads to state’s first 2nd-tier prize of 2016
A Worcester County man who stopped at his local Food Lion in search of affordable limes also bagged his second Powerball ticket of the day – but this one wound up a $1 million winner!
The father of four had already bought one Powerball ticket in Delaware for the Saturday, Jan. 9 drawing when he decided to run his grocery errand. He needed two limes and had passed up the chance to buy them at a previous store because he thought they were too expensive. While his significant other waited in their vehicle, the Powerball player ran into the Berlin Food Lion to grab the limes and – at the last minute – a $6 Maryland Lottery Powerball Quick-Pick ticket.
That night, the longtime couple watched the football playoffs together until she decided to give up on the late-running game and go to sleep. The 51-year-old finished watching the game and remembered his Powerball tickets.
“I checked my numbers, unfortunately, because I didn’t sleep well,” he said. Instead, he paced through the house thinking about his $1 million prize and the difference it would make in his family’s life.
“I was numb,” he said. As the hours passed, he tried to stay quiet. “I didn’t want to wake her up.”
By 4:30 a.m., however, he could stay quiet no longer. First, he let her know that no one won the world-record Powerball jackpot, which rolled to $1.5 billion on Tuesday, Jan. 12. “We still won a million,” he told her, and then sleep was out of the question for both of them!
He signed the ticket and placed it in a safe until he could claim his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. Our winner was one of 28 second-tier Powerball winners across the country in the Jan. 9 drawing. Of those 28 players, two added the Power Play option to increase their prize to $2 million. He was also the only second-tier winner in Maryland.
Three state residents added the Power Play feature to their tickets, tripling their third-tier prizes to $150,000, and seven Marylanders won $50,000 third-tier prizes. In all, 406,168 Marylanders won prizes of $4 and up in the Jan. 9 drawing.
An employee in the HVAC field, our happy winner plans to pay off college loans for his children and the couple’s debts and will then decide how to enjoy whatever is left. He already has his ticket in hand for the next drawing!
Also enjoying the Powerball win is the lucky Food Lion located at 10126 Old Ocean City Boulevard in Berlin. For selling the second-tier winning ticket, the grocery receives a $2,500 bonus from the Lottery.
