Claims $10,000 prize on $10 game
John Grant of Baltimore has fond childhood memories of visiting the former Montgomery Ward Catalog House in South Baltimore on Saturdays with his mom. Decades later, he returned during renovation of the historic building to run wires from floor to floor through his job as a Comcast line maintenance technician.
This week, a $10,000 winning Maryland Lottery scratch-off brought the father of four back to the building, which houses the Lottery’s headquarters, to claim a prize in the Your Fortune game.
“This is surreal,” said the 47-year-old, after describing his connections to the building. The grandfather of two still works in the southwest Baltimore area, too, so the building remains in his work territory.
John’s lucky win came at the end of a long workweek. He worked all day Saturday and decided to treat himself and his wife to cream of crab soup. After buying the soup, he popped in to Security Liquors, located at 6628 Security Boulevard in Baltimore, to buy beverages and four scratch-offs.
The loyal Lottery player prefers to scratch his instant tickets away from other customers. He left the store and returned to his car to play the games. The delighted dad won $5 on the first scratch-off, nothing on the next two tickets and immediately thought he’d won $650 on the Your Fortune game. However, his son disagreed after examining a photo of the winning ticket sent to him via his dad’s smartphone.
John remembers his son saying, “‘Wait, Dad, it looks like you won about $10,000.’ My wife was very excited,” John said. “This wonderful for me. I was happy with $650!”
In his spare time, John is remodeling his home from top to bottom. He plans to spend his prize on new carpet and more home improvements.
The $10 Your Fortune game carries a top prize of $100,000. There are still seven unclaimed top prizes along with 11 $10,000 prizes and thousands of other prizes ranging from $10 to $1,000.
