Elkton couple scores $50,000 playing Triple Green Crossword game

The Gill family of Elkton has specific duties when it comes to one of their favorite pastimes – playing Maryland Lottery scratch-offs. Kevin picks ‘em and Frany scratches ‘em. The loyal players, who indulge their pastime almost daily, have enjoyed their share of good luck. Last weekend, Lottery luck not only came knocking, but broke down their door to deliver a $50,000 prize!

“I always look for a crossword game because I know my wife really enjoys them,” Kevin said. Happily for the Cecil County family, the Lottery’s Triple Green Crossword game was front and center in the display at the Food Mart in Elkton. “When she called me in to look at the ticket that night, I knew something was going on.”

Frany, mother to four and grandmother of three, sat in the bedroom Sunday night staring at her winning ticket. She refused to believe what she was seeing. “It just didn’t seem right,” she told us.  “There was no way it could be me, be us, winning $50,000.”  In fact, it turns out that Frany’s eyes were deceiving her. “I saw nine words on the card, which meant we’d won $10,000.” When the couple sat down to study the instant ticket together, they identified a 10th word.

Their $50,000 win claimed the fifth of six top prizes remaining in the Triple Green Crossword game. Taking care of family bills will be the couple’s primary focus for the prize.

Also celebrating their win is the lucky Lottery retailer, Food Mart at 2249 E. Old Philadelphia Road in Elkton. The Cecil County business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize ticket in the $5 game. There are also six unclaimed $10,000 prizes and thousands of others ranging from $5 to $1,000.
