Prince George’s County woman notches two back-to-back big wins
A longtime Maryland Lottery player had her loyalty rewarded twice in a span of two days, and she paid her good fortune forward by providing help to friends in need.
The Riverdale resident won a $30,000 top prize on the Lottery’s Twisted Treasures scratch-off game. And the next day, she added a $10,000 win playing Deluxe Cash Crossword. The 55-year-old health insurance worker said she has played Lottery games often but had never enjoyed a big win. “I was one of those people who thought all the big wins happened to people in Baltimore,” the Prince George’s County resident said. “Now I know it’s possible to win. When it’s your time, you win.”
She purchased her $30,000-winning Twisted Treasures ticket at Ardwick Liquors, 8307 Ardwick-Ardmore Road in Landover, but took it home to scratch it.
“I’m not a store scratcher,” she said. “I like to get the puzzle games and take them home and sit and relax in front of the TV and have some ice cream.”
As she enjoyed her evening at home in Riverdale, she won the $30,000 prize and another $110 on other scratch-off tickets. The next day, at another retailer, she bought the $10,000-winning Deluxe Cash Crossword ticket.
The lucky winner said she kept her winning tickets in the glove box of her car until she could claim her prizes. She claimed the $10,000 prize at the Maryland Lottery’s claims center in Lanham, but had to wait another few days before she could get to headquarters in Baltimore to claim the $30,000 prize. Players must claim winnings of $25,000 or more at Lottery’s headquarters.
The winner said she chose to share some of her good fortune with friends who were in need, providing $2,000 to one family and $500 to another.
“It was important to me to be able to do that,” she said, adding that she may use some money on car repairs. Aside from those spending plans, she plans to boost her savings with the rest of her prize. “It’s good to be able to save.”
Ardwick Liquors is a winner as well. For selling the top-prize winning Twisted Treasures ticket, the retailer will receive a $300 bonus from the Lottery. Twisted Treasures launched on March 23, and five of its $30,000 top prizes have not yet been claimed. Deluxe Cash Crossword launched on April 28, 2014, and one of its $50,000 top prizes is still unclaimed, along with four $10,000 prizes.
