Megaplier Turns Woodbine Man’s Mega Millions Win Into $20,000 Prize

Retiree gets lucky with quick-pick numbers

A Maryland Lottery fan who plays the same set of lucky numbers in all of his favorite games decided, on a whim, to let the terminal quick pick just one line of numbers on his Mega Millions ticket. The Woodbine resident then added the Megaplier to his ticket and went on his way.

That night, Lottery luck stepped in and gave him a $5,000 win in the game’s June 7 drawing. The Megaplier that night was 4, which boosted his prize to $20,000! The state government retiree had two draws on the ticket, which he purchased at Mount Airy Liberty at 502 East Ridgeville Boulevard in Mount Airy. His big prize came on the first drawing.

“I was going out of town, and I decided to play for the entire week. I didn’t want to miss out,” the 62-year-old grandfather of three said, adding that he didn’t watch the drawings or check the winning numbers online. “I didn’t find out I won until I came back and I was checking my tickets.”

He is not new to winning Lottery prizes but said his previous wins were amounts low enough to cash at Lottery retailers. The Howard County resident said his biggest prizes prior to this one were two $1,100 wins on Multi-Match, $400 on Bonus Match 5 and $300 on Keno. His lucky numbers keep giving him wins.

“Playing is one of my few vices,” said the father of three adult children. While he plays often, he plays for fun and “plays responsibly.” His $20,000 prize, for example, is going into savings in his bank account.

No one has won the Mega Millions jackpot in weeks and it just rolled to $310 million for Friday’s drawing. The cash option is $211.1 million.
