Washington County retiree takes home top prize
A 70-year-old Boonsboro man turned a stop for gas into a $30,000 payday this past weekend. On Sunday, the retiree filled up his tank at Alex Convenience Store, paid for his gas and returned to his car only to realize he had scratch-offs in his glove box to check.
“I took my tickets back into the store and wound up with $19,” the winner said with a smile on his face. “I decided to purchase five Cash Craze Crossword scratch-offs and the rest is history.”
The winner took the instant tickets home and scratched them that evening.
“I saw how many words I had and figured I won something,” the father of two told Lottery officials. “When I saw how much the prize was, I figured I had done something wrong!”
The happy dad quickly called his daughter to share the news. The grandfather of one said he will probably put a large chunk of his prize into his grandson’s savings account. He joked that he may also buy himself a new pair of glasses.
Alex Convenience Store is located at 280 N. Main St. in Boonsboro. For selling the top-prize scratch-off in the $3 game, the store will receive a $300 bonus. The Cash Craze Crossword game still has one $30,000 top prize remaining and three $10,000 prizes, along with thousands of others ranging from $3 to $5,000.
