Glen Burnie Man Still in Shock When Claiming $50,000 Win
A U.S. Navy veteran and father of three remained in shock over his $50,000 Maryland Lottery scratch-off win even as he sat in the Winner’s Lounge at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
“I have never won more than $50,” said the 53-year-old Glen Burnie resident, grinning from ear to ear. “I still don’t believe it!”
The grandfather of five bought doughnuts on Sunday and then headed over to a nearby convenience store for cigarettes and a scratch-off before heading home. He looked at the $5 Biggest Taxes Paid Ever scratch-off, with a $50,000 top prize, and some $3 scratch-offs before making his winning selection of the $5 ticket. The loyal Lottery player enjoys playing both scratch-offs and terminal games.
The lucky winner cited the taxes-paid feature of the ticket as the biggest draw. After scratching the ticket off outside the store, he revealed the symbol that turned the scratch-off into a $50,000 winner. The Anne Arundel County man couldn’t believe his eyes.
“I went back in the store and said to the store clerk, ‘Do you have a pen?’ ” our winner said. He used the store’s pen to sign the back of the ticket and then handed the scratch-off and pen to the clerk and asked him to verify the win. He did so and our winner hurried to his friend’s house to show her the ticket, too. She also confirmed his win.
“It happens to everybody else but never to me,” said the man. He plans to pay off his bills with his winnings and now can afford to move into his own apartment.
The happy man bought his lucky scratch-off at Royal Farms #039 at 2500 Mountain Road in Pasadena. The game, which launched Dec. 23, has nine more $50,000 winning tickets and 10 more $5,000 winning tickets in Maryland stores.
