Retired transit worker didn’t realize he won in Sept. 16 drawing
A Prince George’s County Powerball fan who has played the same sets of numbers since Maryland began offering the game in 2010 just saw his dedication pay off. He won a $50,000 third-tier prize in the Sept. 16 drawing.
The Bowie man said he has a stack of cards with a pattern of numbers to play for each Powerball drawing. He likes to rotate those cards and the numbers.
“I happened to pick out the right card,” he said with a smile.
The winning numbers of the Sept. 16 drawing were 8, 11, 19, 24 and 46; the Powerball was 5. Our winner had 38 instead of 46 and just missed out on the $596 million jackpot for that evening.
According to the retired transit worker, he didn’t realize he was a $50,000 winner. He initially glanced at his ticket and thought he had three numbers with the Powerball. He is glad he discovered his mistake.
“When I went on the Lottery mobile app, it said I had four numbers instead of three. I was happy to be wrong,” he said. The player is undecided on how he will spend his prize.
The 80-year-old has been a loyal Maryland Lottery player since the Pick 3 game started in 1976. “I hit it back in 1976 and I have been hooked ever since,” he noted.
His winning Powerball ticket came from Wegmans #40 located at 9001 McHugh Drive in Lanham.
