Retired carpenter wins $110,760 FAST PLAY progressive jackpot
When he walked into the Walmart in Middle River on June 14, a retired Baltimore carpenter said he remembered something his daughter had mentioned a few days earlier. Knowing that her father is a fan of scratch-off tickets, she told him that Walmart stores recently installed Maryland Lottery vending machines.
“I thought about her, about the conversation and decided to give the thing a try,” he said.
And that turned out to be an extremely fortunate decision.
He approached the machine on his way out of the store and decided to buy a FAST PLAY ticket.
“I’ve been keeping an eye on the Payday jackpot and it was getting up there, so that’s what I chose,” he said.
The $5 game features a progressive jackpot that starts at $40,000 and increases with the purchase of every ticket until a progressive jackpot-winner is sold. When the Baltimore resident saw that his ticket won the progressive jackpot – a total of $110,760 at the time he made his purchase – he was surprised, of course, but mostly relieved.
“We have some bills that we’ve been wanting to get paid off with no real way to do it quickly. This win gives me the way,” he said.
The Baltimore retiree knew right away that the Payday win was real, but it took a lot of convincing to get his wife and daughter to believe it.
“They each just kept saying ‘No!’ until I showed them the ticket and the rules,” he said. “Then the celebration started.”
Walmart #3481 at 112 Carroll Island Road in Middle River is home to this story’s lucky Lottery vending machine. Walmart is a winner, too, as the store will receive a a $1,000 bonus for selling the progressive jackpot-winning FAST PLAY ticket worth at least $100,000.
Payday launched in June 2020, and the game still has 12 more progressive jackpots waiting to be hit, along with thousands of additional prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000.
