Powerball®
Double Play

How is Powerball changing?

Beginning Monday, August 23, Powerball will expand from two nights a week to three, with drawings each Monday night in addition to Wednesday and Saturday nights. Also beginning August 23, Powerball will launch the new Double Play add-on feature. Each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, a separate Double Play drawing will be conducted approximately 30 minutes after the Powerball drawing. Players who add the Double Play option to their Powerball ticket will be able to win prizes in both drawings.

How does Double Play work?

Powerball players can add the Double Play option to their Powerball ticket for an additional $1. Adding Double Play makes the ticket eligible to win prizes in both the Powerball drawing and the Double Play drawing.

How do the prize structures work?

Double Play drawings have a prize structure separate from Powerball. The Powerball prize structure is not changing. Double Play prizes start at $7 and range up to $10 million. Here is the Double Play prize structure:

Will I have a separate set of numbers for the Double Play drawing?

No. When you buy a Powerball ticket and add the Double Play option, the numbers on your ticket are good for both drawings.

Can I buy a ticket for only the Double Play drawing?

No. Double Play is a Powerball add-on feature. You must purchase a $2 Powerball ticket in order to add the $1 Double Play option to your ticket.

Is the price of Powerball tickets changing?

No. The base price of Powerball tickets will remain $2. The optional Double Play and Power Play add-on features each cost $1.

Is the range of numbers in Powerball changing?

No. Players will still select five numbers from a range of 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from a range of 1 to 26. Both the Powerball and Double Play drawings will be conducted using those number ranges.

Is Power Play still available?

Yes. You can add the Power Play option to your Powerball ticket for an additional $1. Adding the Power Play option allows you to multiply any prizes you win in the Powerball drawing, except for the jackpot.

Will Power Play allow me to multiply prizes in the Double Play drawing?

No. The Power Play multiplier will only apply to prizes won in the Powerball drawing. Prizes won in the Double Play drawing can’t be multiplied.

Can a Powerball ticket include both the Double Play option and the Power Play option?

Yes. Adding both Double Play and Power Play will bring the total cost to $4 for each line of numbers you buy. Your options for Powerball tickets are:

  • Powerball: $2 (ticket is eligible for prizes only in the Powerball drawing; no prizes will be multiplied)
  • Powerball + Power Play: $3 (ticket is eligible for prizes only in the Powerball drawing; all prizes except for the jackpot will be multiplied)
  • Powerball + Double Play: $3 (ticket is eligible for prizes in both the Powerball drawing and Double Play drawing; no prizes will be multiplied)
  • Powerball + Power Play + Double Play: $4 (ticket is eligible for prizes in both the Powerball drawing and Double Play drawing; all prizes won in the Powerball drawing except for the jackpot will be multiplied)

Will the Powerball and Double Play drawings be conducted using the same balls and machines?

No. There will be separate machines and ball sets. In Powerball drawings, the ball set for the five numbers from 1 to 69 will be white, and the ball set for the Powerball number from 1 to 26 will be red. In Double Play drawings, the ball set for the five numbers from 1 to 69 will be black, and the ball set for the Double Play Powerball number from 1 to 26 will be red.

What time are the two drawings held?

Powerball drawings occur at 10:59 p.m., and are shown on WBAL-TV at 11:22 p.m. The Double Play drawings occur between 11:30 and 11:40 p.m. and will be live streamed on Powerball.com. Videos of all drawings are archived on Powerball’s YouTube channel.

Why is there a delay between the two drawings?

The drawings are conducted by the Florida Lottery, which has drawings of Florida Lottery games scheduled at 11:15 p.m. The break between Powerball and Double Play will also help to differentiate between the two drawings.

Why is Powerball adding a drawing on Monday nights?

The Monday drawings will help to deliver bigger, faster-growing jackpots. While the Powerball jackpot is always a life-changing amount, lotteries across the country have heard from many players that they enjoy playing for larger jackpots. The additional ticket sales that come with adding a third drawing are expected to produce larger, faster-growing jackpots, increase the number of prizes awarded and increase contributions to vital state programs and services that are supported by state lotteries.

Where are Powerball tickets sold?

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Not all states are offering the Double Play option, but it will be available in Maryland.

Is Double Play available in all states and jurisdictions?

No. There are 13 lotteries planning to offer Double Play when it launches on August 23: Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Washington. Additional lotteries may decide to add Double Play at a later date.
