“Bike Man,” an avid bicyclist and dedicated Maryland Lottery player from Gwynn Oak, is celebrating his $100,000 scratch-off win.
‘Bike Man’ mistakenly thought he won $25,000 on Money Rush instant ticket
After years of playing Maryland Lottery games, a Gwynn Oak man hit big last week with a $100,000 top-prize win on the $10 Money Rush scratch-off.
The retired player, who is going by the alias “Bike Man” to tell his tale of winning, mistakenly thought his prize was for far less. He scratched off the part of the instant ticket showing five winning numbers and then found a match near the bottom of the card for a $25,000 prize.
However, he was not entirely sure he won. The Baltimore County resident called his wife for assistance. She looked at the instant ticket when she got home and realized “Bike Man” had not scratched off all of the possible winning spots.
“I called her at work and said, ‘I think I won $25,000,’” said the 76-year-old player, who is a bicycling enthusiast. “She came in and said, ‘Fool, you’ve won more than that!’”
His wife, who accompanied him to claim his prize at Lottery headquarters, said, “I just kept scratching.” By the time she was done, it was clear the instant ticket was worth $100,000.
This was “Bike Man’s” biggest Lottery prize. He’s hit on Pick 3 and Pick 4 previously for three- and four-digit prizes, but, as he put it, “Nothing like this!”
Thrilled with the windfall, “Bike Man” plans to spend the winnings on home projects including some roof repairs and replacement doors. His wife reminded him that the spending plan could include a new car for her, too.
Sharing in the wealth is ING Wireless II at 7025 Liberty Road in Gwynn Oak. The Baltimore County business picks up a bonus of $1,000 from the Lottery for selling a $100,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
