Our story opens with a woman pulling into a gas station. The Taneytown resident fills her tank, parks at the station’s convenience store and enters The protagonist buys a cup of coffee and, after a slight hesitation, a $50,000 Cash instant ticket. She returns to her car and then….
“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” the 75-year-old told Lottery officials this week. The retired employee of a bookbinding business explained that while she buys Lottery tickets frequently, she only had coffee on her mind when she visited the Jiffy Mart in Westminster that morning. “I was about to leave when I saw the $50,000 Cash ticket there. I’ve won with it before, so I figured I’d give it another go.”
Scratching off her lucky instant ticket in the car outside, the Carroll County woman was stunned when she saw the match that delivered the game’s top prize.
“I must have said, ‘Oh, my goodness,’ a thousand times.” Calling her son to share the news, she was met with disbelief. “I could tell that he thought I was reading it wrong. He asked me if I had my glasses on!”
The $50,000 Cash game appeared on Lottery retailers’ shelves in December with 160 top prizes, an unusually high number for scratch-off games. That fact has not gone unnoticed by players and delivered a positive conclusion to many Maryland Lottery stories. This win leaves 87 top prizes still unclaimed along with 97 $5,000 second-tier prizes.
Also celebrating is the Jiffy Mart at 1 Magna Way in Westminster. The Carroll County business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
