Retired transit worker plans to spend all $100,008 on daughter and grandkids
A Prince George’s County resident used the Power Play feature to turn his third-tier Powerball win into a $100,008 prize.
The Suitland man purchased a five-line ticket at Temple Hills’ Friendly Mart located at 2308 Iverson Street in Prince George’s County. He picked numbers for three of the lines using personal dates such as birthdays and other significant digits. The last two lines were terminal quick picks, which contained the third-tier win in the May 8 drawing.
The 69-year-old said he went to his favorite Lottery retailer to check his $20 ticket and discovered he won the big prize. “When I first saw it, I didn’t realize it was that many zeros. I thought it was only $1,000,” he explained.
Most Powerball third-tier wins result in $50,000 prizes but this lucky player won an extra $50,008. First, he received an additional $4 by matching the Powerball on a non-winning line. Next, he doubled his third-tier win by paying an extra $1 for the Power Play feature. The Power Play multiplier for the drawing was 2X. Power Play also doubled his $4 prize. That extra $1 became a great investment, boosting his overall prize to $100,008.
The retired transit worker said he wants to help his grandchildren afford college and to help his daughter pay bills. “None of this money is for me. It is all for them,” he said.
Powerball drawings take place on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday nights. Now, players can watch the live stream of all Powerball and Double Play Drawings on the Maryland Lottery website.
