Lucky Retired Nurse Wins $50,010 Powerball Double Play Prize

Mt. Airy resident finds win at Lottery retailer hot spot

A 67-year-old retired nurse from Frederick County is $50,000 richer after winning a Powerball Double Play prize in the Oct. 7 drawing. The lucky woman, who normally plays scratch-offs, decided to get a Powerball ticket because the jackpot was $1.4 billion. She won a $50,000 third-tier prize plus another $10 in the Double Play drawing.

Double Play is a second drawing that takes place about 30 minutes after the Powerball drawing. Players can add Double Play to their tickets for an additional $1, which our big winner did. Adding the Double Play option allows players to receive one set of numbers for both the regular draw and the Double Play draw. Double Play has a top prize of $10 million, a second-tier $500,000 prize and the third-tier $50,000 prize.

The Mt. Airy resident missed the jackpot and any prizes in the regular Powerball drawing but took home the third-tier win in the Double Play drawing. She matched four white balls and the Powerball. She added another $10 to her prize by matching one white ball and the Powerball on another line of her $20 quick-pick ticket.

When claiming her prize, the loyal player reflected on her journey to a big win. Last Thursday, she purchased two Powerball tickets at High’s #083 located at 11780 Old National Pike in New Market. The Frederick County retailer is her favorite place to purchase games because she’s won from there in the past. She checked her ticket that Sunday using the Lottery app on her phone.

“I know I checked it about five times and each time it kept saying $50,010,” said the winner, smiling. “When I went to the website, I realized I didn’t have the Powerball numbers, but I did match the Double Play numbers.”

She wasted no time claiming her prize this week at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The married great-grandmother told Lottery officials that Christmas will be extra special this year.

“The holiday is already fun, but it will be ‘funner’ this year,” she said. The big winner also plans to purchase a new car for her husband and pay down some debt.

High’s #083 in New Market is her personal hot spot for Lottery wins. The lucky lady said she’s won $7,000, $5,000 and $1,000 twice, playing scratch-offs purchased at that location. In addition, a $100,000 Ravens X5 scratch-off win claimed this week was also purchased from the same store.
