Retired marina worker purchased ticket off Interstate 95 in Cecil County
A North Carolina man’s stop at a service area off Interstate 95 in Cecil County resulted in a $50,000 Powerball third-tier prize.
The Charlotte area resident was making a typical drive to visit family in New York and stopped at the Sunoco at the Chesapeake House in North East to fill up on gas. While he was there he purchased a Powerball ticket. He checked the ticket on his phone and it appeared to be a winner.
“I was quiet. I wanted to keep it to myself,” said the 78-year-old man.
According to the winner, he wanted more confirmation so he called his son to double check. He started to read the numbers back but his son noticed the numbers were not adding up.
“I started to get worried because he read the wrong line back to me,” his son said with a smile.
The big winner had purchased a five-line Quick Pick ticket and lines two and three both had the Powerball number of 26, That led to confusion as he got the lines crossed. Luckily the winner realized his mistake and read the correct line back to his son.
“It was real and I was a winner. I am glad I found the right line,” he said with a laugh.
The winning numbers for Saturday, Aug. 12 were 19-21-37-50-65 with a Powerball of 26 and he had 59 instead of 50.
The retired marina worker has no immediate plans for the money, but will invest it into a certificate of deposit (CD) for now.
