Retired police officer plans to use proceeds to help his kids afford college
A Baltimore County resident who rotates numbers that he uses for Lottery games saw one of his combinations pay off with a $50,000 Pick 5 windfall.
The Pikesville man said there is no significance to these numbers. He simply thinks about them and then writes them down. When he checked the Pick 5 numbers for the Oct. 30 evening drawing, the retired police officer zeroed in on the winning number: 71729.
He was confident that he had the first three numbers but was not sure about the 2 and the 9. He went back and looked at his $2 two-draw ticket and was happy to see the 2 and 9 in the correct order. He had placed a $1 straight bet. “I hit it straight and boxed. When I saw I won $50,000, I couldn’t believe it,” he said.
According to the big winner, he won $5,000 on Pick 4, too, but said this prize is on another level. He encourages Pick 5 winners to play regularly. “Keep playing and stick with it. Don’t give up,” he said.
The 62-year-old wants to help his kids with their college bills and does not plan to spend the prize on personal items. “I am saving it for my kids. I learned the older you get, the less money you need,” he said.
His lucky Lottery retailer is Pikesville Xpress Mart at 200 Reisterstown Road. The Baltimore County retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000-winning Pick 5 ticket.
