Washington, D.C. Man Uses Account Number to Win $50,000 Pick 5 Prize

Player plans to purchase a car for daughter with lucky windfall

A Washington, D.C. man has played Pick 5 using a five-digit account number for months. He was all smiles when his number won a $50,000 prize in the Sept. 24 drawing.

The 66-year-old said he believes the key to his win was to play every day using the same numbers. He plays midday and evening drawings seven days a week.

“If I would have switched my numbers, I would not have won. You have to play those numbers for every drawing,” he told Lottery officials.

The winner said he played Pick 5 in Washington, D.C. for years but started playing in Maryland after the Maryland Lottery began offering the game in February 2022.

The Washington, D.C. government employee said he enjoys Pick 5 because there are no bonus balls or special playstyle options. He likes the fact that when his five numbers are chosen, he wins. The happy player planned to use the prize to purchase a car for a family member.

“I guess I am going to have to treat my daughter,” he said with a smile.

The loyal Lottery player bought his winning ticket at Seat Pleasant BP located at 5818 Martin Luther King Jr. Highway in Prince George’s County. The winner said he is a loyal customer of this lucky retailer.

“I try to go to the same store. I am not sure if it is a superstition or maybe I like it there because I feel comfortable with the employees,” he said.

For its role in selling a $50,000 winning Pick 5 ticket, the business in Seat Pleasant earns a $500 bonus from the Lottery.
